《Flowers and Ma (間): Learning to Breathe in the Spaces Between》

In Japanese culture, there is a beautiful concept called Ma (間) Ma (間)—the space, the pause, and the quiet distance where rhythm is allowed to breathe. Whether in language or floral design,
the same spirit can be found— the beauty of what is intentionallyleft unfilled.

When I teach Japanese, I often remind my students that it is the pauses between words that give language its warmth.
Likewise, in floral design, the space between flowers allows an arrangement to breathe with grace.
Both have taught me the same lesson:There is beauty in not rushing.

In the fast rhythm of everyday life, flowers have taught me to slow down, while language has taught me to express myself with greater care.
As I quietly arrange each stem and observe the direction of every blossom,
I am reminded of the moments in class when I carefully explain the subtle difference between 「です」 and 「ます」.
That same attentiveness becomes a quiet practice for everyday life.

Time never stops simply because we are busy. But when we learn to embrace Ma—
to leave space, to pause, and to breathe—
we can rediscover the gentle rhythm within ourselves, where flowers and language meet in quiet harmony.
