During my time studying floral design in Japan, I experienced one of the calmest and most fulfilling periods of my life.
My teacher never rushed us into arranging flowers. Instead, we were first taught how to truly observe \u2014\nthe stillness of a flower, the direction of its petals, and the gentle movement of light.
She often said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Flowers will never urge you to bloom. You shouldn't rush yourself either.\"
Those words have become one of the guiding principles of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the past, I believed everything had to be done as efficiently as possible.
Studying Japanese, working, and managing daily life all felt like a race against time.
It was through floral design that I experienced, for the first time, the quiet strength of slowing down.\n\nFlowers cannot be rushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you trim the stems too quickly, they may not absorb water properly.
If you place them in a hurry, they may lose their balance.
Life is much the same.
When we rush to finish everything, we often miss the beauty along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day, my teacher asked us to spend ten minutes simply observing a single branch of flowers.\n\nWe were told to do absolutely nothing.
At first I thought it was rather strange.\n\nBut gradually I began to notice the layers of colour, the subtle shadows, and the direction in which each petal reached.
Only when we become still can we truly see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Flowers have always been speaking.\n\nWe have simply been too busy to hear them.
The Japanese word \u300c\u5f85\u3064\u300d(matsu \u2013 to wait) carries more than the meaning of waiting.
It also reminds us to give things the time and space they need.
At that moment, I realised that learning floral design was also learning how to listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I gradually brought this gentle rhythm into my everyday life.\n\nWhen making tea, I no longer rushed to pour boiling water, but waited patiently for it to cool slightly.
When studying Japanese, I stopped rushing to memorise words and instead paid attention to the rhythm and beauty of each pronunciation.
Life slowly began to change.\n\nBeing slow is not the same as being lazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is a quiet form of perseverance.
When you slow your pace,
the world has a way of meeting you halfway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Floral design has taught me far more than techniques.\n\nIt has taught me a way of living.
To slow down.\n\nTo observe.\n\nTo listen.\n\nTo feel.
Not only when facing flowers,\n\nbut also when facing ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have come to believe that true beauty blossoms when we stop racing against time.
