On the surface, it is simply said before a meal.

It means far more than simply saying,\n\"You worked hard.\"
It is a gentle acknowledgement of another person's efforts,\na quiet expression of appreciation and mutual respect.
That spirit of kindness\nis one of the foundations of Japanese culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is also an art of understanding\nthe delicate distance between people.
Words spoken too directly may cause hurt.\nWords spoken too strongly may sound impolite.
So people often choose gentle expressions,
allowing one another space to breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You learn proportion.\nYou learn the beauty of empty space.
And perhaps most importantly,\nyou learn when to let go\u2014
allowing words,\nlike flowers,\nto bloom quietly in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And Japanese,\nthrough that mirror,\nreflects a way of living
