Learning a language,
is not first about speaking\u2014
it is about listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many people believe that mastering a language means speaking fluently and responding quickly.
But to me,
those who truly understand a language
are those who know how to listen between words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Japanese, there is a word: \u300c\u805e\u304f\u300d(kiku),
which means \"to listen.\"
Yet its deeper meaning goes beyond hearing with our ears\u2014
it is about listening with the heart,
and sensing the voice behind another person's words.
In Japanese culture, listening is a form of courtesy,
and also a gentle expression of respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I often tell my students:
\"Don't rush to answer. First, listen to the other person's words.\"
Sometimes,\n\nthe pauses in conversation and the beauty of \"Ma\" (\u9593)
communicate more deeply than words themselves.
That is the quiet beauty of true understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Floral design is much the same.
When arranging flowers,\n\nI am not simply placing each stem.
I am listening\u2014\n\nto the posture of every flower,
and the direction it wishes to grow. Flowers quietly tell us where they wish to belong;
language quietly tells us the rhythm of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We live in a world filled with noise.
Too many people long to be heard,\n\nand too few are willing to listen.
Perhaps learning a language
is also learning to rediscover stillness\u2014
to find understanding,
warmth,\n\nand quiet resonance\n\nwithin another person's words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Language is a bridge.
And whenever we choose to listen with our hearts,
